Linear Motor vs. Ball Screw Performance

Speed Comparison

In terms of speed, linear motor has a considerable advantage, linear motor speed up to 300m/min, acceleration of 10g; ball screw speed of 120m/min, acceleration of 1.5g. linear motor has a great advantage in the comparison of speed and acceleration, linear motor in the successful solution to the heat problem, the speed will be further improved, while the rotary servo motor + ball screw The limitation in speed is difficult to improve further.

The linear motor also has an absolute advantage in dynamic response due to motion inertia, clearance and mechanism complexity. Due to its fast response and wide speed range, it can achieve the highest speed instantly at startup and stop quickly when running at high speed. The speed range can reach 1:10000.

Accuracy Comparison

Because the drive mechanism simply reduces the problem of interpolation hysteresis, the positioning accuracy, reproduction accuracy, and absolute accuracy of linear motor, controlled by position detection feedback, will be higher than that of rotary servo motor + ball screw, and it is easy to achieve. The positioning accuracy of linear motor can reach 0.1μm. rotary servo motor + ball screw can reach up to 2~5μm, and requires CNC – servo motor – seamless connector – thrust bearing – cooling system – high precision rolling guide – nut holder – table closed loop the transmission part of the whole system should be light weight and the grating accuracy should be high. In order to achieve higher stability, the rotary servo motor + ball screw should be dual-axis drive, linear motor for high heat components, should take strong cooling measures, to achieve the same purpose, linear motor should pay a greater price.

Price Comparison

Price, the price of linear motors is slightly higher, which is the reason why linear motors are more widely used.

Energy Consumption Comparison

Linear motor to provide the same torque when the energy consumption is more than twice the rotary servo motor + ball screw, rotary servo motor + ball screw is an energy-saving force-boosting transmission components. The reliability of linear motors is influenced by the stability of the control system, which has a strong influence on the surrounding.

Application Comparison

In fact, the linear motor and rotary servo motor + ball screw two kinds of drive, although each has its advantages and disadvantages, but both have the best range of application in CNC machine tools.

Linear motor drive has unique advantages in the following areas of CNC equipment:

(1) high speed, ultra-high speed, high acceleration, high production volume, as well as the need for high-frequency positioning, adjusting the speed size and direction of frequent changes in the occasion. For example, the production line of the automotive industry and IT industry, precision and complex mold manufacturing, etc.

 (2) Large ultra-long stroke high-speed machining center, aerospace manufacturing industry in the light alloy, thin-walled, metal removal rate of the whole component hollowing processing. For example, the United States CINCIATI Hyper Mach machining center (46m), Japan’s MAZAK HYPERSONIC1400L ultra-high-speed machining center.

(3) Requires high dynamic, low speed, high speed follow-me, and highly sensitive dynamic precision positioning. For example, a new generation of high-performance CNC electric machining machine tools represented by Sodick, CNC ultra-precision machine tools, a new generation of CNC crankshaft grinding machine, cam grinding machine, CNC non-circular lathe, etc.

(4) light load, fast special CNC equipment. For example, Germany DMG’s DML80FineCutting laser engraving and punching machine, Belgium LVD’s AXEL3015S laser cutting machine, MAZAK’s HyperCear510 high-speed laser processing machine.
